START’s Nature Winter Activities

Over the winter months START continues to see the incredible impact that green social prescribing sessions are having on those who join. For many, these events have become a highlight of their week—a time to learn new skills, connect with others, and feel at home in a space they may not have known about before the programme. Participants have shared how much they look forward to attending, with some even saying it’s been instrumental in helping with their depression. Others have expressed that they wish they could come even more often.

The open, accessible nature of these sessions has been key to their success. By removing barriers to participation—such as having an informal referral pathway—START has been able to reach a much broader section of the community. While continuing to support individuals within the context of its established mental health and wellbeing provision, this approach has allowed START to engage with people who might not otherwise have had access to similar opportunities.

Making the sessions as accessible as possible has been an important part of START’s programme design. For example, bus ticket refunds have been offered to those who need help with transport. At the same time, many participants live locally and are able to walk to the venue, further strengthening connections within the immediate community.

The support of community leaders in promoting the programme has been absolutely crucial to its success in reaching people too. Their role in spreading the word and encouraging participation has made a real difference. START has also received referrals through VCSE connectors, and now that the programme is more established, word-of-mouth recommendations from participants themselves are helping it grow even further.

During the colder, winter months, having a warm studio space connected to the garden has been invaluable—especially for older participants. The space at Brunswick House has allowed START to bring nature-based activities indoors, ensuring the sessions remain enjoyable and engaging no matter the weather. Winter activities have included:

  • Wreath making
  • Bird box building
  • Seed planting

As the programme continues, this blend of indoor and outdoor opportunities will remain a vital part of START’s approach, helping to reach more people, support wellbeing, and strengthen connections within the community.
