Recovering from alcoholism and years of depression, Julie sought to take part in a community project which would support and accept her. Luckily, the Brinnington Big Local volunteers were in the process of transforming an unused space into an allotment!
Julie jumped at the opportunity and was thrilled to gain a new outlook on how nature and participating in community activities could improve her well-being!
Six years later, Julie is now the Chair of Brinnington Green Thumbs. She uses her passion for growing to inspire others about the benefits of nature for mental health.
"A few months ago I was really down, and I just said to another lady I’m going down to the gardens, and we both just cleared plots. The pair of us walked out of here as if we’d had the best day ever. It gives you somewhere beyond your own four walls to think." 💚

Our Greater Manchester groups have been learning about safe and appropriate natural fire-lighting this week. Participants have practiced how to safely light and maintain a fire and have enjoyed roasting some marshmallows! lancashirewildlifetrust #gmnatureforhealth

We had an inspiring manchester_mind trip to ntcastlefieldviaduct last week. It was great to see the gardens and to hear how they are working with the local community. We look forward to seeing how the project continues to develop.

One of our Prestwich groups have been busy working on a small unused patch of land turning it into a wildlife area. This week we put in some mini-ponds which we are going to plant-up in the coming weeks; along with creating a hibernaculum for any frogs that may move in! 🐸 lancashirewildlifetrust #gmnatureforhealth
