Myth Busting Green Social Prescribing

Green Social Prescribing is an innovative approach that integrates nature-based activities with healthcare to improve mental and physical well-being. Despite its growing popularity in recent years, there remain several myths about how effective it really is.

In this article, the team from Petrus debunk some of these myths, highlighting the true benefits of Green Social Prescribing, using up to date research.

Myth 1 – Green Social Prescribing only benefits Mental Health

It is very true, at PIER allotment where our Green Social Prescribing programme takes place, we have seen first-hand the mental health benefits of individuals being involved in nature-based activities and having access to green space.

BUT…

It also has a positive impact on physical health too.  By its very nature, nature-based activities involve movement and light exercise and thus, through a personalised approach to accessing activities, typically benefit an individual’s physical health.

Myth 2 – It’ll never take off

There are some people who might think Green Social Prescribing is a GPs way of getting you out of the surgery and getting you to “go for a walk” instead of having an appointment with a health professional.

BUT…

It’s true that being outside, having access to green space and gentle walking has multiple benefits but Green Social Prescribing in its broader sense is gaining much recognition across health sectors across the world.  The NHS has invested in pilot programmes to integrate it into mainstream healthcare.

Myth 3  – It isn’t accessible for all

Finally, there is a myth that Green Social Prescribing isn’t accessible to everyone. This perhaps stems from concerns regarding the practical challenges of implementing Green Social Prescribing programs.

BUT …

At Petrus, and in the wider Green Social Prescribing community, the social and therapeutic horticultural practitioners work hard to ensure that their programmes are accessible to all.  This is done via thorough referral systems, and where necessary and appropriate, having additional support to ensure that anyone who does want to take part, can take part in nature-based activities and experience the benefits of Green Social Prescribing.

Petrus Green Social Prescribing is sited at PIER allotment, Belfield Road, Rochdale.
